The Ayish Bayou is a 32-mile freshwater stream that flows southwards, from its headwaters north of the City of San Augustine, through the City of San Augustine, to the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Both portions of the waterbody located upstream and downstream of the City of San Augustine are currently listed as impaired in the Texas Integrated Report of Surface Water Quality for not meeting the State’s water quality standard for bacteria.
To support determination and development of approaches for addressing bacteria impairments in the Ayish Bayou, TWRI is currently undertaking a review and analysis of existing hydrological and water quality data in the watershed. Through this project, TWRI is working with the Angelina & Neches River Authority (ANRA) to facilitate a stakeholder engagement process aimed at raising awareness of water quality impairments and promoting public participation in developing strategies for improving water quality.
Objectives:
- Analyze water quality data to illustrate historical water quality in the watershed.
- Characterize potential causes and sources of pollution through water quality and watershed-related data gathering and assessment to develop a better understanding of the factors causing bacteria impairments.
- Facilitate a stakeholder engagement process aimed at raising awareness of water quality impairments in the watershed.
