The West Mud Creek watershed encompasses approximately 93 square miles in Smith and Cherokee counties. West Mud Creek is a tributary of Mud Creek, a tributary of the upper Angelina River that flows into the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The downstream portion of West Mud Creek is listed as impaired in the Texas Integrated Report of Surface Water Quality for not meeting the state’s water quality standards for bacteria.
To support the determination and development of approaches for addressing impairments in the watershed, the Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) is investigating current water quality in the watershed through an integrated assessment of existing watershed and water quality data and facilitating stakeholder engagement processes aimed at raising awareness of water quality impairments.
Objectives
- Analyze water quality data to illustrate historical water quality in the watershed.
- Characterize potential causes and sources of pollution through water quality and watershed-related data gathering and assessment to develop a better understanding of the factors causing impairments.
- Facilitate a stakeholder engagement process aimed at raising awareness of water quality impairments in the watershed.
